Lib Dems back action against 'gas guzzlers'

8.20.06pm GMT Thu 25th Jan 2007

Liberal Democrats in Brighton & Hove say that the polluter should pay and are backing a local green tax for gas guzzling vehicles such as 4x4s.

The Lib Dems say that the city should follow the lead of Liberal Democrat London Borough of Richmond to increase the price of a residents' permit for such vehicles.

Councillor Paul Elgood said: "The Liberal Democrat council in Richmond has pioneered this policy and the people of Brighton and Hove understand that polluting cars are not good for our city centre.

"We want to see the money raised to be spent on trees and improving open spaces, as the city's very own carbon neutralising project.'
