Liberal Democrats launch their campaign to keep the City's Council homes under public control5.44.21pm GMT Sat 2nd Dec 2006
14,000 homes are owned by the council in Brighton and Hove. 31% of homes in East Brighton alone are Council run. Some 3,000 people depend on Council housing. That's an awful lot of families who have been left in the dark as to the consequences of switching Council housing to Housing Associations. There is going to be a referendum seeking a tenants' verdict on the future of their housing, which is going to be difficult if they have not been properly informed. Liberal Democrats want to know the facts- the facts which answer the basic question- 'What's wrong with Council housing?' Why give up most of your legal protection and rights to get a Housing Association which might turn out to be yet another feeding trough for those nice people who- in much of the country- have managed to sell off the best properties previously owned by the Council?
