Seafront anti-social behaviour issues must be prioritised8.22.43am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 14th Jun 2006
Liberal Democrats say that anti-social behaviour on Hove seafront must be tackled by the Council and Police. At last week's Environment Committee (8 June 2006), Lib Dem Councillor for Brunswick & Adelaide Paul Elgood took the opportunity to raise a series of issues related to anti-social behaviour issues on Hove seafront, especially between the Peace Statue and the King Alfred. On Thursday night alone beach hut owners reported three incidents. Speaking at the meeting, Paul called for an anti-social behaviour campaign to combat the problems, he said: 'We are very concerned that over the last few years we have seen an increase in the number of problems on Hove seafront, especially at night. These problems are seasonal and are associated with anti-social behaviour. 'Beach huts are being repeatedly broken into, there is serious vandalism and damage done as well as late night disturbances on the Prom. 'The Police have helped to make this a priority and have been very supportive. The council now needs to look seriously at improving seafront officer patrols, improving lighting on the actual Prom and even better CCTV to deter crime. 'Beach hut owners, for example, are being plagued by the night with break-ins and vandalism. This is the start of what will become a serious crime wave down there.' Fellow ward Councillor David Watkins called for a strengthening of the by-laws on the seafront and in the historic squares. He added: 'We are pleased that progress is being made to review the by-laws on the Lawns, Issues such as football, barbecues, fireworks and other anti-social behaviour must be properly addressed to ensure that he seafront is accessible to all.'
