A campaign has been launched for a permanent AIDS Memorial to mark the lives of those who have died from the disease in Brighton & Hove.

A petition was presented at tonight's full meeting of the City Council, by Lib Dem Councillor Paul Elgood.

The campaign is calling for a symbolic piece of public art to act as a focal point for remembering those who have suffered or are suffering from AIDS/HIV. The only other permanent memorial in the UK is in Manchester.

Health Authority figures show that the number of deaths reported of people treated by the HIV clinic in Brighton between 1984 and 2004 is 460.

Councillor Paul Elgood said: 'A permanent AIDS memorial would provide a symbolic year round place for people to remember those who have suffered and are suffering from this terrible disease. There is only one other permanent memorial in the UK, and that's in Manchester.

'Since first raising I've received huge support for the proposal, with many people moved by the suggestion.

'A highly visible piece of public art perhaps located somewhere such as the Old Steine could become the focus for this in Brighton and Hove.

'Brighton and Hove has been good at marking events such as World AIDS Day each year and other ways of remembering, such as tree planting. I hope there will be enthusiasm for this too.
