Editor's Letter from Hazel Thorpe, Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate for Brighton Pavilion.

Dear Editor ,

As a concerned Sussex resident, and Parliamentary candidate for Brighton Pavilion, I am fully supportive of those residents in the Hollingdean area who are saying No to the proposal to build a Waste Transfer Station and a Material Recovery Facility in their built up area.

I would also object on the following grounds;

  • It would be detrimental to the surrounding residential area and not a suitable location due to the visual impact on the street scene.

  • Transporting waste with its inherent risk of pollution due the nature of the contents, is unacceptable in such a built up environment and the likelihood of those attending the local schools being subject to airborne particulates and micro-bio aerosols.

  • A large increase of heavy goods vehicles dominating the road scene and causing a further safety hazard for those students walking to school, is hardly a Safe Route to school in my opinion,

  • The operational times coincides with school opening times and operating all day and every day would be excessive for the people living in the vicinity thus their quality and well being would be at risk

  • The air pollutants from noise and fumes would also have an adverse effect upon local homes in both quality of life and value.

  • I would also query whether the Hollingdean Road bridge is able to cope with the increased traffic movements , and again is part of a major walkway to school.

I believe that several other sites have been suggested and whilst we have a need to get rid of our waste, I propose that they are revisited and/ or other more humanly environmentally friendly sites found.

Yours sincerely

Hazel Thorpe
