Liberal Democrats have backed a bid to persuade John Prescott to provide direct funding to improve the city's council housing stock. A motion agreed at Thursday's city council meeting will urge the Deputy Prime Minister to consider a 'fourth' option, which will see direct investment in the stock. Previously the council had to look at a housing association, ALMO or PFI for the £100 million needed to upgrade the homes.

Speaking at the meeting, Housing Spokesperson Councillor David Watkins said: 'All evidence suggests that people want to stay with the council. What we are talking about are people's homes so it is vital their views are respected. I don't expect Prescott to listen, but its worth a try.'
