5.29.45pm GMT Sat 29th Jan 2005

Local campaigner Paul Elgood has launched a new campaign to crackdown on bogus callers and rogue traders. The Hove Liberal Democrat councillor has designed a special crimestoppers card for residents to display on their door or window,

The cards which are being delivered in Brighton & Hove, warn callers that the resident will not buy or sell at their front door and tells them they will be expected to produce identification to verify who they are.

"Sadly, there have been cases of bogus callers reported in the Brighton & Hove area," says Cllr Paul Elgood, "I would urge everybody to be extremely cautious about conducting business on their doorstep.

"With the dark evenings, we need to be even more vigilant about opening our doors to strangers." warned Cllr Elgood, " I hope my crimestoppers cards will give the right message those who try to steal or rip off residents."

Cllr Paul Elgood urges all residents, particularly elderly people, never to engage tradesman who casually call at the door suggesting work is required, always insist on several estimates and not to pay until the work has been completed satisfactorily.

"During the past year I have heard of several distressing cases where rogue traders have conned residents on the doorstep into parting with large sums of money" said Cllr Elgood.
