A trip by Council Officers to meet architects in Los Angeles over the redevelopment of the King Alfred Centre has been slated as an utter waste of public money by Liberal Democrats.

Lib Dem City Council Group Leader Paul Elgood said: 'I can see no justification for this wastage. Don't these people realise its public money they wasting? If it so important to see these architects then they should come here and pay their own fare - after all the Council is the client here.

'It is commonplace - indeed good practice - for the design team for such a project to be based at or close to the site in question. This provides a good opportunity for the team to be close to the local community and understand the needs of the surrounding area.

'We feel very let down by this wastage as it was only after Liberal Democrat councillors asked questions on this, that plans for the trip came out.'
