Responding to a report in the The Lancet, which claims that across Europe 100,000 children a year die due to environmental pollution, Norman Baker MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary and MP for Lewes, said:

"These figures should be a cause of serious concern for governments across Europe. Protection of the environment is essential for both public health and economic development.

"Allowing the current levels of pollution to continue is simply not an option when so much distress is being caused and so many young people's futures are being destroyed.

"These statistics should serve to bring a new and greater focus on environmental issues and pollution"
