Rainbow Flag Success2.37.30pm GMT Fri 28th Nov 2003
A protocol on flying flags on civic buildings during Pride Week is being drawn-up, following a motion proposed by Lib Dem Group Leader Councillor Paul Elgood. The motion which sought the Rainbow Flag to be flown on civic buildings during Pride Week was amended to include other events in the city's calendar. The motion achieved cross party support last night. Paul said: "Pride is a tremendous award-winning event which brings in many thousands of additional visitors to Brighton and Hove. The Rainbow Flag is the symbol of this event and should be flown proudly from council buildings." "Other cities across the country and world - from Manchester to San Francisco - show their support in this way. Its more than just a gesture and will reaffirm the city's support for the festival." "Previous attempts to get the rainbow flag raised - both before this year's Pride Week and back in the past have been rejected: this has flown in the face of the local lesbian and gay community."
