DVD Box Sets

Hey everybody! Hope you're all doing well today. Welcome back to my arts and entertainment blog. With all the cold weather recently, there is nothing I would rather be doing then spending all day in bed watching dvd box sets under the covers. I bought some new to me, used box sets here:http://www.for-sale.co.uk/dvd-box-set and over the past 2 days I've watched the whole first season of Orphan Black. Believe me when you start watching you won't be able to stop.

 Orphan b

Orphan Black is a science fiction, biopunk, drama thriller starring Tatiana Maslany.  Check it out on IMDB as I'm sure you'll all love it as much as me! It follows Sarah Manning, a street wise, con-artist, criminal orphan who witnesses a strangers commit suicide by jumping in front of a train. The well dressed stranger – Beth Childs – happens to look exactly like her, and when Sarah sees that Beth has left her handbag on the platform she snatches it and runs from the scene. Sarah assumes the strangers identity with the plan of cleaning out the dead woman's savings. However Sarah runs into trouble, converting into Beth is harder than she thought. Beth is a policewoman and her partner does not trust this new Beth. As Sarah spends longer as Beth she discovers secrets about why she and Beth look so similar and that there is in fact more of them who look alike. We meet “Soccer mom” Alison Hendricks and “Nerdy Scientist” Cosima Niehaus who tell Sarah that she in a clone, and that she has many, many other 'sister clones' spread across Europe.

Sarah continues to hunt for answers and meets more clones, including Helena who turns out to be murdering clones. They stumble across several other clones and try to find out why they have been created.

Story so far

One of the best scenes of the season is when Alison believes that her husband Donnie is her monitor, and that he is the one reporting back on her. She catches him sneaking out of the house and staying gone for a couple of hours on her nanny cam, and after re watching she witnesses him circling the bed watching her, comically wearing a t-shirt and his Y-front pants. Alison wanders into her kitchen and Donnie cracks into her about all the work she hasn't done in the lead up to the neighbourhood party that they are supposed to be hosting that afternoon. She eventually boils over and questions him about where he went in the middle of the night and he dodges the question instead continuing to yell at her about all the stuff she hasn’t done around the house, and that he now has to go out and get ice. Enraged Alison pursues him and demands to know where he’s going, shouting back that he is going to get all the stuff she was meant to get yesterday she, spying his golf bag, grabs a golf club and hits him around the face with it as Donnie falls to the ground in shock. In shock Alison calls Sarah for help and 'kidnaps' Donnie and ties him to a chair. In the next scene we see Alison in her craft room, with Donnie bound to the chair with Donnie waking up confused. After a couple of minutes of back and forth retorts Alison picks up her hot glue gun. Donnie sneers at her “You’re going to stick sequins on me?” as she continues questioning him about the files she 'knows' he has on her. She drips hot glue onto his hairy chest as he screams in pain.

The most interesting thing, and possibly the hardest thing to compute is that Tatiana Maslany plays all these clones. Watching them as they interact together and trying to understand how scenes work when there's all 3, and later on 4,5,6 clones with completely different personalities is incredible. All the characters have such distinct and well formed characters that you don't even notice it's the same actress, and I can't even comprehend how these scenes must be to film and how Maslany manages to get herself into character. Other characters include Felix, Sarah's foster brother played by Jordan Gavaris, who is possibly my favourite character. Sassy Felix, is unflusterable, no matter what the situation he is able to evaluate it and deal with it. Siobhan/Mrs. S who is played by Maria Doyle Kennedy is Felix and Sarah's foster mother, Art, who is played by Kevin Harchard is a Beths partner in the police, and Paul, who is played by Dylan Bruce, is Beths long term boyfriend who she lives with.

If you're a fan of science fiction, or action drama series then you'll love this show. I regret not watching it sooner, although I love that I can binge watch the series.  I hope you’ve enjoyed this post, and if you haven’t checked out my last post on bullying, please do so. Until next time folks, have a great day!
