What does it take to be a Lib Dem Council Candidate?

The preamble to the constitution of the Liberal Democrats states that:

'The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. We champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals, we acknowledge and respect their right to freedom of conscience and their right to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. We believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens to attain these ideals, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives.'

This statement - very much our core values - is at the heart of both Liberal Democrat thinking and activity, and reflects the views and sentiments we would expect from every candidate we put forward for public office. It are these central beliefs which drives all areas of the party and for which all candidates and indeed members must be fully signed-up to.

Liberal Democrats encourage the selection of a wide and diverse range of candidates. We positively encourage applications from a range of backgrounds, with one common aim to forward the objectives of liberal democracy in our country and within its many diverse communities. Each and every candidate must sign up to these values, and by doing so agree to abide by the highest personal code of conduct in their political lives.

And what makes a good candidate for public office? Clearly, they must have honesty, integrity and a hardworking approach. We encourage candidates to come forward from the community itself, as often these people understand local needs and aspirations better than any. Our candidates must be prepared to work at the heart of the community they want to represent. Whilst they must also be prepared to show leadership in certain areas, often the role of a local representative is that of facilitator - assisting residents in the way they can raise their views or access services. Sometimes, that means putting aside your own views on an issue and working with a range of ideas and suggestions to get some much needed action on a problem. It can also takes a lot of patience!

What is often forgotten in politics these days is vision. What this city often lacks is a coherent vision for the way forward, and indeed the leadership needed to drive it. We want to encourage candidates willing to help put forward a clear agenda for change - to make this city and its authorities more reactive and open to the needs and aspirations of the community.

Oh and don't forget a sense of humour - its got to be fun and enjoyable.
